What to expect at each stage of treatment:

Learn more about what to expect:

Evaluation and Assessment: I will assess the patient's orofacial muscles, breathing patterns, swallowing mechanics, and any related habits or dysfunctions. This evaluation helps determine the specific muscle imbalances and functional issues that must be addressed.

Treatment Planning: Based on the evaluation, I will develop a personalized treatment plan. The plan may be adjusted and modified throughout the course of treatment as necessary.

Education and Instruction: I will provide education and instruction to the patient about the principles of myofunctional therapy, the goals of treatment, and the exercises and techniques involved. The patient will learn about proper oral posture, nasal breathing, swallowing patterns, and any necessary lifestyle modifications.

Muscle Exercises and Reprogramming: The core of myofunctional therapy involves various exercises and techniques designed to strengthen and retrain the orofacial muscles. These exercises may include tongue exercises, lip exercises, swallowing retraining, breathing exercises, and postural corrections. I will guide the patient through these exercises, ensuring proper form and technique.

Habit Elimination: If the patient has any harmful oral habits, such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or mouth breathing, I will work with the patient to identify and eliminate these habits. Strategies, behavioural modifications, and exercises will be implemented to help the patient break these habits and establish more favourable orofacial behaviours.

Progress Monitoring and Adjustments: I will regularly monitor the patient's progress throughout treatment. They will assess changes in muscle function, oral habits, breathing patterns, and overall oral health. Adjustments to the treatment plan may be made based on the patient's progress and individual needs.

Integration with Other Therapies: Myofunctional therapy may be integrated with other therapies, such as orthodontic treatment, speech therapy, or sleep apnea management. Collaboration with other healthcare professionals involved in the patient's care ensures a comprehensive approach and optimized treatment outcomes.

Maintenance and Follow-up: Once the active phase of myofunctional therapy is complete, the patient will be provided with maintenance strategies to maintain the gains achieved during treatment. Regular follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor progress, address any relapses or new concerns, and provide ongoing support and guidance.

Sessions range from 6-14 weekly or bi-weekly visits on average. It's important to note that the duration and frequency of myofunctional therapy treatment may vary depending on the individual's condition, responsiveness to therapy, and the complexity of the issues being addressed.
